One of the delights of CRIPtic is bringing together the work of a range of artists, in compositions, commissions, and collaborations, to bring to our audiences at the Barbican, and, hopefully, online.

The card has a thin white border and the rest of the card is black with turquoise accents. On the left hand corner, there is a triangular cross section of a photo of Rufus. In it musician Rufus Elliot is pictured playing its viola, focusing on something out of shot. It is wearing a black short sleeved shirt, with its short hair tied up at the back. Below this is a quote selected by the artist. This reads: Musician-half of the HONK Ensemble.

Rufus Isabel Elliot

Rufus Isabel Elliott and Rylan Gleave are composing a piece of music for CRIPtic, exploring how loneliness affects gender-diverse and neurodivergent people. Natural sounds, outdoor recordings, and the fracturing of noise, voice, and beauty is creating music that fills the space and draws in the audience.

Rylan Gleave

How did we choose these compositions?

It was a hugely challenging process. We hadn’t initially intended to carry out this work, and nor did we have allocated we have funding for it. However, the quality of the work we were presented with at application stage forced our hand. The work we have here is work we had to have, because it was so incredible.

The work by Rylan and Rufus, also known as the Honk Ensemble struck us from the beginning. They work with natural sound, and the lack of distinction between human, animal, and instrument. Rylan and Rufus are recording this work from around Scotland, and will form the fabric of the show.
