The CRIPtic x Spread the Word free online writing retreat ran online from Thurs 29 July to Sun 1st Aug. It was modelled on a standard residential retreat, but taken from home. We provided a relaxed space with support, BSL interpreters and auto-captions.

The online writing retreat was for deaf and disabled writers of poetry, fiction, and/or scriptwriting. We worked to stretch the writers, with workshops for everyone to attend, on each of those genres. There were creative exercises, workshops, guest readings, industry insights, and a public sharing event. There, participants showcased their work to a wider audience.

We encouraged applications from deaf and disabled writers who might not usually apply for opportunities. This includes deaf and disabled writers from other marginalised backgrounds, those who didn’t think workshops were for them, and those who aren’t sure whether to apply. An online writing retreat is the perfect opportunity to try out a writers’ space.
