Composer: Rylan Gleave

Much of my work addresses both the personal and political, stemming from a need to process.
This is the back of an artist announcement card for Rylan Gleave. The design is styled on an American baseball card. The card has a thin white border. At the top of the card, there is a thick black band with the artist name, Rylan, and a description of their role in CRIPtic, as Composer. Below this, there is a black and white portrait photograph of Rylan. In it, Rylan is gazing softly into the distance as he stands against a black wall. He has wavy brown hair, with a centre parting and his fringe falling onto his face. He has a silver hoop in his left ear, and is wearing a black hoodie, with brown buttons around the collar. Below the photo, there is a large black and white logo which reads CRIPtic.

What made you want to be an artist / performer?

I suppose my flair for the dramatic! I trained as a singer before studying as a composer, then my voice began to gradually creep back into my work.

What/who inspires your craft?

Much of my work addresses both the personal and political, stemming from a need to process. I’m fortunate to work with Rufus (the other half of HONK Ensemble), who is a continual inspiration – check out OVER/AT, its trans music-making world.

What’s your vision for the future of theatre and where do you see yourself going after CRIPtic?

Accessibility is at the forefront of the need to revolutionise the arts world. After CRIPtic, I’d love to take to the stage again in my composer/performer role, and hope to do so in as many weird and wonderful projects as possible!
